Preadmission Service

Burnside Hospital offers a complimentary Preadmission Service at both Toorak Gardens and Stepney sites to assist patients in preparing for their upcoming elective surgery.

Our aim is to elevate your surgical preparation experience through the convenience of timely, comprehensive information delivered in an informal, supportive setting via a telehealth appointment.

Our Preadmission service offers you the opportunity to address any questions or concerns about your upcoming procedure and recovery, including any pre-existing conditions or specific requirements you may have. The session, led by an experienced Burnside Hospital Registered Nurse, typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes, and you're welcome to invite a friend or family member to join the call.

During your preadmission assessment, we cover various critical aspects, such as:

  • Reviewing your eAdmission or digital admission forms
  • Providing insights into pre and post-operative care
  • Offering guidance and education on pain management, intravenous therapy, wound drains, oxygen therapy, chest physiotherapy, and leg exercises.
  • An outline of exercise and mobilisation regimes
  • Advice regarding your predetermined length of stay as indicated by your doctor
  • Provide an opportunity for you to discuss any aspect of your planned surgery.

A preadmission consultation may be initiated through your referring surgeon, the hospitals preadmission service itself; especially if there are specific health history details that can enhance your admission and treatment planning, or simply by your own choice.

We strongly encourage you to take full advantage of this valuable service as part of your preparation for your upcoming surgery.
