High Dependency Unit

Visiting HDU?

Visitors should preferably be restricted to two persons at a time, and for short periods of 15-20 minutes.  At times, the nursing staff may ask your visitors to wait outside while treatments are being carried out. Visitors can wait in the lounge of the von Rieben South ward.

Family members can discuss with the HDU nurse the best times for visiting the patient, as consideration of patient interventions, scheduled investigations, and opportunities for rest periods are required in order to optimise the care provided to the patient.

In many cases, patients come to the High Dependency Unit directly from Theatre and are still drowsy from the anaesthetic or medications used to relieve pain. For this reason, all telephone enquiries are directed to the HDU staff member in the first instance.

Ideally, one designated family member should make telephone enquiries, so they in turn can relay information concerning the patient’s condition to other family members.  This will allow the HDU staff to spend more time with the patient.

Mobile phones should be turned off within the HDU environment to reduce interference with medical equipment and also out of consideration for other patients in the unit. Visitors can use mobile phones in the lounge and foyer.
