Your
new arrival
at Burnside

What to expect

Obstetrics 8

When your pregnancy is confirmed your GP can refer you to one of our trusted and accredited obstetricians.

When you’ve chosen your obstetrician, get in touch and we will secure your spot in our Maternity Unit and answer any questions you may have.

When you choose Burnside’s Maternity Service, you gain access to a wide range of pre- and postnatal services, top-tier maternity facilities, and all the extensive medical benefits that Burnside Hospital offers.

We don’t require a booking fee, but we do recommend checking with your health fund to understand your private health maternity coverage.

How Much Will It Cost?

The cost of your hospital stay depends on your health insurance and the level of cover you have.

Before booking, it’s a good idea to confirm with your insurer that you have obstetrics cover and if there are  potential out-of-pocket expenses. If you have family cover, check if it extends to your baby in case they need to be admitted to the special care nursery.

Along with the cost of your private hospital stay, there are additional costs for services such as your obstetrician, ultrasounds, pathology, paediatrician, and anaesthetist if required.

Whether admitted to the nursery or not, your baby will be under the care of a paediatrician and while Medicare doesn’t cover private hospital stays, it does contribute to the cost of your baby’s paediatric care.

If you don’t have private health insurance, please contact our Accounts Department or the Maternity Unit for more details.

Length of Stay and Discharge Information

The length of your stay will depend on whether you have a vaginal birth or a caesarean section. You and your care team - midwives, obstetrician and paediatrician, will decide on the best discharge plan for you and your baby.

Our standard discharge time is before 10:00am. If you’re not able to leave at this time, we’ll ask you to wait in the lounge. And if it’s more convenient you may choose to take baby home the evening before.
