Caring for Your Newborn
To foster a strong, nurturing relationship with your baby, we encourage you to care for your newborn in your room, with our experienced midwives offering support whenever needed. This approach helps you feel more comfortable and involved in your baby’s early care while allowing us to provide expert guidance in areas where you may need assistance.
Our midwives are skilled in supporting you with techniques for swaddling, settling, bathing, feeding and changing nappies, so you can build confidence and competence in your baby’s day-to-day care.
In addition to supporting you in hands-on care, we will provide comprehensive information to ensure you feel informed and empowered. We encourage you to ask questions and take the time to absorb the information our team provides.
Routine Care for Your Newborn
With your consent, we will carry out routine care for your newborn as part of the standard procedure following birth:
- Vitamin K (Konakion): This vital injection is given to all babies soon after birth to assist their blood clotting mechanism, which is naturally immature at birth. This helps reduce the risk of bleeding, particularly in the first few weeks of life.
- Hepatitis B Vaccination: On the same day, your baby will receive the first dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine, as part of the national immunisation program. This vaccination protects your baby from the Hepatitis B virus, which can lead to serious liver disease later in life.
- Neonatal Screening Test (Guthrie Test): Performed around 48 hours after birth, this blood test helps detect metabolic and genetic disorders that may not be immediately apparent. The test is simple and involves a heel prick to obtain a small blood sample. This screening is a routine procedure for all babies born in Australia and can help identify conditions that require early treatment to prevent long-term health issues.
These routine practices are standard procedures aimed at ensuring the health and wellbeing of your baby. We will keep you informed throughout each step of the process.
Feeding Support
Feeding your baby is one of the most important aspects of their early development. Our midwives are here to support you as you establish the feeding method that works best for you and your baby, whether that’s breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or a combination of both.
We strongly recommend breastfeeding as it offers numerous health benefits for both mother and baby, including essential nutrients and antibodies that help protect your baby against illness.
Our midwives are highly experienced in supporting all aspects of breastfeeding, from the early stages of latching and establishing a routine to troubleshooting any challenges that may arise, such as engorgement or nipple discomfort. We provide personalised care tailored to your specific needs and encourage you to ask for help whenever you feel it’s necessary.
It’s important to remember that breastfeeding can take time to establish. In addition to direct breastfeeding support, our team will provide guidance on the signs that your baby is feeding well, how to manage breastfeeding while also caring for your own health and wellbeing, and how to maintain a good feeding routine. We aim to help you develop a positive and confident breastfeeding experience, allowing you to form a deep bond with your baby and ensure they are getting the nutrition they need for healthy growth and development.
Post‑Discharge Support
When you and your baby are ready to go home our support continues with guidance to help you through the early days and weeks at home.
Whether you need a follow-up appointment, additional advice on newborn care, or just reassurance, Burnside Hospital’s dedicated midwifery team and paediatricians are here to support you every step of the way.
We know that every baby and family is unique, and we strive to provide a comprehensive, supportive environment where you can feel confident in caring for your newborn and forming a strong, lasting bond.
