Fees and Charges
At Burnside Hospital, we strive to provide clarity and support regarding your financial and medical care arrangements, ensuring a smooth and informed experience with transparency around fees and charges.
Private Health Fund Eligibility Check
Prior to your admission, we will conduct an eligibility check with your health fund to confirm your level of cover and identify any out-of-pocket fees and charges.
While we will advise you of the potential fees and charges attached to your hospital stay, this estimate does not include additional fees that may arise such as in-hospital specialist consultations or third-party services.
We recommend contacting your private health insurer before your admission to confirm the following:
For uninsured patients, an estimate of hospital fees and charges will be provided which must be paid in full two days prior to admission.
Additional charges incurred during your stay must be settled at discharge.
Payment Methods and Deadlines
Wherever possible, we encourage that all payments are made using EFTPOS, credit card, BPAY, or electronic funds transfer. For all admissions:
Specialist fees including those for surgeons, anaesthetists, and other providers are billed separately and are not included in the hospital’s account.
For payment inquiries or to make credit card payments over the phone, please contact our Accounts Department.
Additional Costs from External Providers
During your hospital stay you may require diagnostic or treatment services provided by external third parties. These services will be billed separately and may include:
- Pathology: blood or tissue sample testing.
- Diagnostic Imaging: x-rays or other imaging services.
- Pharmacy: medications dispensed during your stay or at discharge.
For questions about these services and the associated costs, please contact the relevant service providers directly.
Specialist Fees and Paediatric Care
Specialist fees are billed separately from the hospital charges. We recommend discussing fees with your treating doctor before receiving services, particularly for major treatments. These costs may include surgeon, anaesthetist, or assistant fees.
For maternity patients, all newborns are under the care of a paediatrician, even if they do not require admission to the Special Care Nursery.
Paediatricians will:
- Examine your baby within the first 48 hours.
- Conduct regular visits during your hospital stay.
- Offer a follow-up review 6–8 weeks post-birth or as needed.
Paediatric care may involve an out-of-pocket gap payment, which is usually billed after your discharge. For non-admitted care, Medicare typically provides rebates for eligible services.
Maternity Patients: Hospital Costs and Insurance Coverage
The cost of maternity care depends on your health insurance coverage and level of benefits. Contact your insurer to confirm:
- Whether your policy includes obstetrics coverage.
- Any additional out-of-pocket expenses, such as excesses or gaps.
- If your newborn is covered under your policy, particularly for potential nursery admission.
Patients without private health insurance may contact our Accounts Department for an estimate of hospital fees. Please note this estimate does not include specialist or external service provider fees.
