The Private Patients’ Hospital Charter

Burnside War Memorial Hospital fully supports the Private Patients Hospital Charter as outlined under section 73F of the National Health Act (1953).

The primary objectives of the Charter are to:

  • Inform Patients: The Charter provides guidance on what private health insurance funds, medical practitioners, private and public hospitals, and day hospital facilities are expected to provide to private patients.
  • Assist in Decision Making: The Charter offers valuable advice for individuals considering contributing to health funds, helping them make informed decisions about their healthcare options.

This Charter is designed to help private patients navigate and manage their healthcare effectively, ensuring they understand their rights and entitlements. It also provides important guidance for doctors, hospitals, and health funds, ensuring that private patients receive the best value and quality of care from their private health insurance.

To assist you further, an information sheet is available in all patient rooms. Additional details can also be accessed via the Department of Health website.
