Dr Zoe D Scounos

Thoracic and Sleep Physician

Dr Zoe D Scounos is a Thoracic and Sleep Physician who underwent her undergraduate training at the University of Adelaide having completed the like in 1995, followed by her postgraduate training and basic physician training in a few of the major public teaching hospitals in Adelaide.  At the level of a senior medical registrar in 2003, she underwent a sabbatical in far north Queensland, Townsville in order to manage an acute admissions department at the Mater Hospital, facilitating tertiary acute referrals from a large geographical area including the Pacific Islands.  Here she was one of the first Clinical Lecturers for the first cohort of medical graduates of the James Cook University medical school.  Furthermore, she provided clinical training and facilitation for overseas doctors in obtaining their Australian qualifications through the Australian Medical Council examinations who were in the field of Anaesthetics.  After 3 years in rural Queensland, she relocated to Brisbane in order to pursue and complete her specialty training in Thoracic and Sleep medicine which was mainly had at the nationally and internationally acclaimed chest hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital.  Experience in all sub-specialties in thoracic and sleep medicine was obtained, with the latter focussed on at the Greenslopes Private Hospital.

In 2008, she was awarded her fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.  This was followed by locum work as a Thoracic and Sleep Consultant within the Thoracic Department of the Prince Charles Hospital combining private work at the Holy Spirit Northside Hospital on adjoining campuses.  Combined public and private work were had for 6 years before focusing on sole private practice in the last 4 years.  Over the last 10 years she maintained her clinical appointment as a Senior Lecturer for the northside medical school of the University of Queensland, along with being an associate partner in one of the largest and longest standing private sleep services of the state, Queensland Sleep.  Furthermore, in the last few years she pursued medico-legal work for asbestos related lung/pleural disease.

Since her relocation back to Adelaide in early 2019 she has joined with Adelaide Respiratory in order to build on the service given her clinical interests in general thoracic medicine, sleep medicine, bronchoscopy and medico-legal work for asbestos related lung/pleural disease.  Provision for inpatient and outpatient services are had at the Calvary Adelaide Hospital, along with inpatient services at the Central Districts Calvary Hospital, St Andrews, and Ashford Hospital, with facilitation of sleep services through the Burnside Private Hospital. Since early 2020, she has also joined the Elizabeth Specialists Suites to further expand on the respiratory and sleep service provided, given her above clinical interests.
