A major milestone for the future of healthcare at Burnside Hospital.

Burnside Hospital has reached another significant milestone in the delivery of its future Health Precinct, with the Godfree House Redevelopment receiving development approval from the State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP).

The approval follows a comprehensive planning and assessment process after the project was referred by the South Australian Minister for Planning in recognition of its scale, complexity and significance to the future of healthcare in South Australia.

This important decision clears the way for one of the most significant investments in Burnside Hospital's 70-year history and reflects confidence in a project that will strengthen healthcare capacity, improve patient access to specialist services and support the evolving needs of South Australians for decades to come.

Development approval is more than planning consent – it is an endorsement of a vision to create a modern health precinct that expands access to high‑quality care.

Why this approval matters

Development approval represents far more than planning consent. It is an endorsement of a vision to create a modern, integrated health precinct that will expand access to high-quality healthcare and enhance the patient experience.

As demand for healthcare continues to grow across South Australia, investment in contemporary clinical infrastructure is essential. The Godfree House Redevelopment has been designed to meet that demand, delivering facilities that will enable Burnside Hospital to provide more services, support more patients and continue delivering exceptional care in a world-class environment.

The project will create a purpose-built, three-storey clinical facility that will connect seamlessly with Burnside Hospital, bringing together a broad range of specialist healthcare services within a single integrated precinct.

Once complete, the redevelopment will deliver:

  • Two additional operating theatres and a dedicated procedure room, increasing surgical capacity.
  • Expanded cancer treatment services, including additional chemotherapy facilities.
  • Advanced diagnostic imaging and pathology services.
  • Purpose-built fertility and women's health services.
  • Specialist consulting suites that bring multidisciplinary care together in one location.

Together, these facilities will enable Burnside Hospital to care for more than 140,000 patients each year while improving access, convenience and continuity of care for the community.

Strengthening South Australia's healthcare system

The Godfree House Redevelopment represents a significant investment in South Australia's healthcare future.

By increasing private healthcare capacity, the redevelopment will complement the broader public health system, helping to reduce pressure on hospital services while providing patients with greater access to specialist treatment closer to home.

The project will also deliver lasting economic benefits through the creation of hundreds of jobs during construction and ongoing employment opportunities once the precinct is operational, supporting the local economy while attracting leading clinicians and healthcare professionals to Burnside Hospital.

Building on a proud legacy

For more than 70 years, Burnside Hospital has remained committed to delivering exceptional healthcare to the South Australian community.

The Godfree House Redevelopment continues that legacy by investing in facilities that reflect the future of medicine, advances in healthcare technology and the changing needs of our patients.

Receiving development approval is an important milestone in that journey.

It reflects years of careful planning, collaboration and consultation, and provides the foundation for a redevelopment that will transform the way healthcare is delivered at Burnside Hospital.

As the project progresses, we look forward to sharing further updates as we continue building a health precinct that will benefit our patients, our clinicians and the South Australian community for generations to come.
