How to Enable Wi‑Fi Calling on Your Device While in Hospital ‑ Android Users

A nurse in a blue checked shirt gently checks the wrist of an older male patient resting comfortably in a hospital bed with monitoring equipment.

Wi-Fi calling lets you make and receive calls and texts using a Wi-Fi network instead of your mobile signal. This is especially helpful in places with poor cellular coverage, like hospitals.

Follow the steps below to easily enable Wi-Fi calling on your Android device while in Burnside Hospital.

Note: The steps to enable Wi-Fi Calling may vary slightly depending on your phone brand (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, etc.). Devices from 2017 or later, or running Android 12 or higher, are generally required to support Wi-Fi Calling, though exact requirements can vary by brand.

  1. Open Settings
Tap the Settings app (gear icon).
  2. Go to Connections / Network & Internet
Tap either Connections or Network & Internet, depending on your phone.
  3. Tap “Wi Fi Calling”
If you don’t see it directly, try:
    Tap Mobile Network > Advanced
Or open the Phone app > tap 3 dots > Settings > Wi Fi Calling
  4. Turn On Wi Fi Calling
Tap the switch to enable it.
  5. Set Preferences (Optional)
    If offered, choose:
Wi Fi Preferred – Uses Wi Fi when available
Cellular Preferred – Uses mobile network first
  6. All set!
You should now see a small Wi‑Fi calling icon in your status bar, indicating that Wi‑Fi calling is active.
