High Dependency Unit
Burnside Hospital’s High Dependency Unit (HDU) is an integral part of the hospital consisting of a 4 bed observation area and a number of attached side rooms.
The area has state of the art equipment including cardiac/invasive monitoring and respiratory support including Mask CPAP and Nasal High Flow Oxygen therapy.
The area is staffed by experienced Registered Nurses and supported by a team of Doctors specializing in intensive care who are on call 24 hours a day to provide support and care to those patients that require this level of care. Allied Health professionals including Physiotherapists also provide a key support for patient care.
Patients in HDU have their own TV and telephone however calls are screened by nursing staff in the first instance in the interests of the patient’s wellbeing.
Patients in HDU require higher levels of nursing observation, intervention and rest. For this reason visitors may be restricted to significant family/friends and the amount of time may also be limited by staff in arrangement with the patient, and in some instances their Doctor.
Flowers in HDU can pose safety and infection control risks, and therefore it is suggested that flowers are not given to the patient until the patient is transferred to the ward and is feeling better and can fully appreciate them.
