Burnside Hospital Sleep Centre

In recent years, research into sleep has received increasing attention and many important discoveries have been made.

Advanced tests are now available to determine the quality of sleep and to diagnose the conditions that may adversely affect normal sleep patterns.

The Burnside Hospital Sleep Centre is at the forefront of this technology and has been designed to help the significant proportion of men and women who suffer snoring, sleep apnoea, abnormal body movements in sleep and other sleep disorders. Treatment studies for various sleep disorders are also conducted including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).

Sleep disorders can have a serious impact on general health and well being. Ongoing sleep problems can be as dangerous to health as untreated high blood pressure or diabetes. They can also have a serious impact on personal relationships and workplace productivity.

The Sleep Centre includes six comfortably furnished, private rooms with en suite bathroom, together with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. Studies are conducted by fully qualified Sleep Technicians, with Respiratory Physicians reporting on the study data.

Appointments can be made by phoning 8202 7272 and a doctor's referral is needed.

Endometriosis Care Centre of Australia (ECCA)

Endometriosis is a complex, but often under-diagnosed condition, that affects up to 10 per cent of women in Australia during their menstruating years. In endometriosis, cells that normally line the uterus occur and grow on nearby organs such as the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, bladder and bowel.

Like the lining of the uterus, the endometrium grows under the influence of the major female hormone oestrogen. This causes severe period pain (dysmenorrhoea) and damage to pelvic organs. Endometriosis can also cause painful intercourse, bowel pain, pelvic adhesions, and difficulty in becoming pregnant.

It is present in 50 per cent of women who experience severe period pain and in 25 per cent of women with fertility problems. Endometriosis can affect women from their teenage years until menopause and sometimes beyond.

The Endometriosis Care Centre of Australia (ECCA) brings together an interdisciplinary team of specialised gynaecologists, a nurse counsellor and associated health professionals, who are committed to providing comprehensive care for women with endometriosis. One of five centres operating nationally, ECCA was formed in 1998 with the aim of delivering expert, supportive care for women with this condition.

ECCA Adelaide is now decentralised and serviced through the various specialists rooms, located at the centres listed in the contacts section of the ECCA website. Conveniently located just minutes from the city, the centres offer modern facilities. Our professional and friendly team offers consulting, treatment and counselling services tailored to meet the specific needs of women with endometriosis.

To make an appointment for one of our regular consulting sessions, leave a detailed message for the Nurse Counsellor on (08) 8407 8585 and your call will be answered as soon as possible, alternatively you can go to www.ecca.com.au/adelaide.html  and contact us. You will need a letter of referral from your general practitioner to see one of our specialist gynaecologists. Private health insurance is not required to attend the centre for a consultation. Should surgery be required, Burnside Hospital offers leading-edge theatre facilities, complemented by tastefully appointed private room accommodation. Highly skilled and caring nursing staff provides the highest standard of care, complemented by five-star hospitality.

Women attending the ECCA clinic have access to ongoing support; advice and education to help them positively manage and meet the challenges of living with endometriosis.

If you think you may have endometriosis and would like your pain assessed, you can :

Contact the ECCA clinic on 8407 8585 and discuss your symptoms with our nurse counsellor.
Discuss the issue with your general practitioner.
Obtain a referral from your general practitioner to a gynaecologist associated with ECCA at Burnside Hospital.

Burnside Respiratory Centre

The on-site Lung Function Unit provides a complete range of lung function tests to both adults and children with respiratory symptoms. These tests aid in the diagnosis and ongoing management of asthma, emphysema and other lung disorders. Test results can also assess the respiratory fitness of prospective scuba divers, and that of employees in a variety of occupations.

Additionally, skin tests can assess people's reaction to common environmental allergens that may trigger asthma or hayfever.

Tests are conducted by a qualified Pulmonary Technician and reported on by a Respiratory Physician. Patients are usually tested within a week of referral from their doctor, with results provided within 24 hours. Modern computerised equipment ensures that tests are performed quickly and accurately.

We welcome referrals from any qualified medical practitioner. If you would like to refer a patient for respiratory function tests, please download and print the attached form.
