Endometriosis Care Centre of Australia (ECCA)
Endometriosis is a complex, but often under-diagnosed condition, that affects up to 10 per cent of women in Australia during their menstruating years. In endometriosis, cells that normally line the uterus occur and grow on nearby organs such as the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, bladder and bowel.
Like the lining of the uterus, the endometrium grows under the influence of the major female hormone oestrogen. This causes severe period pain (dysmenorrhoea) and damage to pelvic organs. Endometriosis can also cause painful intercourse, bowel pain, pelvic adhesions, and difficulty in becoming pregnant.
It is present in 50 per cent of women who experience severe period pain and in 25 per cent of women with fertility problems. Endometriosis can affect women from their teenage years until menopause and sometimes beyond.
The Endometriosis Care Centre of Australia (ECCA) brings together an interdisciplinary team of specialised gynaecologists, a nurse counsellor and associated health professionals, who are committed to providing comprehensive care for women with endometriosis. One of five centres operating nationally, ECCA was formed in 1998 with the aim of delivering expert, supportive care for women with this condition.
ECCA Adelaide is now decentralised and serviced through the various specialists rooms, located at the centres listed in the contacts section of the ECCA website. Conveniently located just minutes from the city, the centres offer modern facilities. Our professional and friendly team offers consulting, treatment and counselling services tailored to meet the specific needs of women with endometriosis.
To make an appointment for one of our regular consulting sessions, leave a detailed message for the Nurse Counsellor on (08) 8407 8585 and your call will be answered as soon as possible, alternatively you can go to www.ecca.com.au/adelaide.html and contact us. You will need a letter of referral from your general practitioner to see one of our specialist gynaecologists. Private health insurance is not required to attend the centre for a consultation. Should surgery be required, Burnside Hospital offers leading-edge theatre facilities, complemented by tastefully appointed private room accommodation. Highly skilled and caring nursing staff provides the highest standard of care, complemented by five-star hospitality.
Women attending the ECCA clinic have access to ongoing support; advice and education to help them positively manage and meet the challenges of living with endometriosis.
