Burnside Hospital Stepney

Burnside Hospital proudly announces acquisition of Sportsmed Hospital.

Burnside War Memorial Hospital has been a proud part of the local community for more than 65 years, always investing in our facilities and our people to provide the best levels of care to patients and their families.

As part of that duty of care, we are continually looking for ways to strengthen our business and improve our offering to ensure we can keep meeting the needs of our community.

To do this, we need more capacity. All our theatres are fully utilised, and we have unmet demand from surgeons and their patients. That’s why we have been looking for a similarly sized hospital business to help us grow.

Therefore, we are delighted to announce that we have come to an agreement to acquire 100% of the Sportsmed Hospital business at Stepney.

This acquisition of the Sportsmed Hospital business will create Burnside Hospital Stepney which will be a wholly owned subsidiary and enables us to operate across two conveniently located eastern suburb sites. We will effectively double our capabilities, growing from five operating theatres to 10 and jumping from 76 to 125 beds.

Most importantly, we will be able to offer more care to our community. Sportsmed Hospital is an outstanding facility with highly skilled teams and its additional capacity will help us meet demand for services. The agreement includes the head lease on the Stepney site, which gives us security for many decades to come.

Like Burnside War Memorial Hospital, Burnside Hospital Stepney will be run as a not-for-profit community hospital and both will share the same patient-first ethos.

It will remain business as usual at both hospitals. All clinical staff will retain their current roles and both hospitals will continue to service their current theatre lists. As the businesses grow and evolve, there will be opportunities for staff to work and learn in a different environment and having two highly skilled teams means we will have the flexibility to deploy resources where they’re most needed.

This is an exciting time. We are creating a stronger and more capable hospital service across two sites with one shared commitment – to care for our community.

For Burnside Hospital Patients

What happens to patients who are currently awaiting surgery at Sportsmed or Burnside?

It is business as usual at both hospitals. Therefore, if you are already booked at one of the two hospitals, then nothing changes.

In the future, you will still have the same surgeon but having two sites will give us the flexibility to offer the most appropriate theatre location dependant on your requirements.

Can I book my surgery in at the new Burnside Hospital Stepney instead of Burnside Hospital Toorak Gardens?

No. Your surgery will go ahead at the location as previously arranged by your surgeon.

Will my surgeon move to Burnside Hospital Stepney?

No. All surgeons will remain at their current consulting and operating locations.

For the Community

Why has Burnside Hospital done this?

By acquiring this facility and creating Burnside Hospital Stepney, we will effectively double our capabilities from five operating theatres to 10 and from 76 to 125 beds.

Most importantly, we will be able to offer more care to our community. With all lists at Burnside currently full, the capacity within the Stepney facility will help us meet unmet demand from VMOs.

The agreement includes the head lease on the Stepney site, which gives us security for many decades to come. And, like Burnside War Memorial Hospital, Burnside Hospital Stepney will be run as a not-for-profit community hospital and both will share the same patient-first ethos.

What will happen to Sportsmed patients who need surgery?

It’s business as usual. Burnside Hospital Stepney will continue to welcome the independent non-owner orthopaedic surgeons who have visitation rights there.

What surgeries will we offer at Burnside Stepney?

In the first instance, we will be offering orthopaedic surgery as this is where we have the greatest demand. However, we are likely to expand services over time.

How many more patients will we be able to treat because of the acquisition?

We anticipate being able to treat between 600-800 additional patients per year.
