MATERNITY SERVICES EARLY DISCHARGE OPTION

The Burnside Hospital is pleased to offer its patients another option to consider, which supports the diverse needs of women and their families.  In our experience there are occasions when patients request the opportunity to be discharged earlier to meet their personal requirements.  Burnside Hospital is pleased to be able to facilitate such requests.

Discharge Planning

Ordinarily, patients are discharged at 10am in accordance with the following guidelines:

Women who have had a normal vaginal delivery are discharged on the morning of the 5th day.

Women who have had a caesarean section are normally discharged on the morning of the 6th day.

Criteria for Eligibility for Early Discharge Option

An early discharge can be considered either at the patient’s, Obstetrician’s or the Hospital’s request.
Any early discharge must be approved and authorized by the patient’s treating Obstetrician.
If electing the early discharge option the following will occur:

Women who have had a normal vaginal delivery will be discharged on the morning of the 4th day.

Women who have had a caesarean section will be discharged on the morning of the 5th day.

Please be advised that all other services that would routinely be available for a normal length of stay are still available to you.
