The Burnside Sleep
Centre
The Burnside Sleep Centre is a leader in the provision of diagnostic
and treatment services for patients with sleep disorders performing
overnight sleep studies. Comprising of six rooms, each with independent
climate control and private en-suite, all rooms are equipped with
king size adjustable single beds and televisions to create as closely
as possible a home-like atmosphere.
Disorders investigated include

• Periodic limb movements of sleep
• Narcolepsy
• Insomnia
• Parasomnias such as sleepwalking and night terrors

Services
Diagnostic and treatment tests
include:
• Polysomnography (PSG)
• Multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT)
• Maintenance of wakefulness testing (MWT)
• CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) titration
• BiPAP (Bi-level positive airway pressure) titration
• Transcutaneous oxygen titration
• Carbon dioxide monitoring
Referral Procedure
All sleep studies need to be referred by a medical specialist
(General Practitioners cannot refer patients directly for
sleep studies).
If you suspect you may have a sleep disorder, please download and print the attached referral form and take it in to your general practitioner. Referring doctors receive a detailed report
of
the overnight sleep study with interpretation by the reporting
Respiratory/Sleep
Physician.
Once you have booked
in for a sleep study, a comprehensive pack including admission
details and forms and information
about the
study is posted to you.
Health Insurance
For patients with private hospital health insurance, your
Burnside Hospital bed fee and sleep study fee should be
covered by your
health fund. Please check with your private health insurance
fund for information regarding any costs or out of pocket
expenses which
may be associated with your consultation and treatment.
Please note that consultations with the reporting and treating
Respiratory/Sleep
Physician are not covered by private health insurance.
Any gap above the Medicare rebate must be paid by you.

Dr Peter Robinson
Graduating from the University of Adelaide in 1976, Dr
Peter Robinson undertook post-graduate training in Denver,
Colorado, where he obtained
his Fellowship
of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1983. He has been
a Senior Visiting Consultant at the Royal Adelaide Hospital since 1985
and
started
the Respiratory Unit at Burnside Hospital in 1990.

Dr Hugh Greville
Dr
Hugh Greville graduated from Monash University and has
trained in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine in Australia
and overseas,
working at Wayne State University
in Michigan and USA for 10 years as Director of the Sleep Unit before
relocating to Adelaide. He is currently a Senior Consultant
in the
Department
of Thoracic Medicine at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and is a Senior Lecturer
in the Department of Medicine at Adelaide University.

Professor Mark Holmes
Prof Mark Holmes graduated from the University of Adelaide
in 1981 and is a Senior Consultant in the Department of
Thoracic Medicine at the

Hospital
and has been an Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide since
2003. He is a qualified sleep physician and has been a practicing Consultant
in

Assoc/Professor Hubertus Jersmann
A/Prof Hubertus Jersmann graduated from the University of Düsseldorf in Germany in 1984. He migrated to Adelaide in 1988 and completed his Physician training at TQEH as well as FMC and RGH. He has an MD from the University of Düsseldorf, a Ph.D from the University of Adelaide and spent two years in Edinburgh for his postdoctoral studies in Respiratory Cellular Biology. Hubertus Jersmann is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Thoracic Medicine at the Royal Adelaide Hospital since 2002 and has been a Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide since 2003. He is a qualified sleep physician and has been a practicing Consultant in Sleep Medicine since 2002 in the public sector and since 2006 in Private. Dr Jersmann is fluent in German.
All patients will be bulk-billed for their visits and for Sleep Studies a Gap-cover reimbursement arrangement is in place with all Private Insurers.

Professor Paul Reynolds
Prof Paul Reynolds trained at the University of Adelaide and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in General and Thoracic Medicine. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1992. He completed a PhD in airway inflammation at the Hanson Institute then spent five years working in the USA at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Human Gene Therapy. In 2002 he returned to the Royal Adelaide Hospital Department of Thoracic Medicine as Senior Consultant Physician and Director of the Lung Research Laboratory, Hanson Institute. In 2004 he completed post-FRACP accreditation in Sleep Medicine and in 2005 was appointed as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine of the University of Adelaide. In 2006 he was awarded a prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council Practitioner Fellowship. He has acquired numerous research grants from the NHMRC and other agencies relating to a broad range of respiratory conditions including COPD, Pulmonary Hypertension, Mesothelioma, Lung Cancer and Lung Transplantation. More recently his research interests have expanded to include the role of atherogenic inflammatory mediators in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and novel therapies for Interstitial Lung Disease. He has an extensive publication track record and frequently presents original basic and translational research in national and international conferences. He is also actively engaged in the conduct of Clinical Trials of new pharmaceutical agents and therapeutic devices. Other roles include Chairman of the Central Programming Committee and member of the Executive of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, Chairman of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee and Board Director / Vice President of the Asthma Foundation of SA, member of the Curriculum Development Committee for Respiratory Medicine of the RACP, Member of the National Reference Group for Lung Cancers. In 2007 A/Prof Reynolds was Convenor of the Joint Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology / American College of Chest Physicians Annual Scientific Congress. His clinical interests span the breadth of Respiratory and Sleep medicine and his research program is directed at the development of novel therapeutic strategies and clinical translation.

Dr Dimitar Sajkov
Graduated in 1983 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sts Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, and has specialized in thoracic and sleep medicine both in Australia and overseas. Dr Sajkov is an accredited sleep physician with a background of significant research and clinical practice in sleep medicine since 1990. He holds a Masters and two Doctoral degrees, one of which is in sleep medicine. Dr Sajkov is a senior Respiratory and Sleep Consultant at the Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital and a Senior Lecturer at the Flinders University of South Australia. He is fluent in Macedonian, English, Russian, Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian.

Dr Chien-Li Liew
Dr Chien-Li Liew graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1999, and trained in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, working as a Staff Specialist in Thoracic Medicine at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and as a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide before relocating to Toronto, Canada, to develop further skills in Advanced Lung Disease, Respiratory Failure, Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Multi-organ Transplantation. She worked with the St Vincent’s Hospital Heart-Lung Transplant Unit in Sydney in 2008. Chien-Li Liew has broad training in all aspects of Respiratory and transplantation medicine, and completed full Sleep Medicine training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She also has a special interest in the pulmonary complications of haematological diseases, having recently completed her thesis in this field.

Dr Dien Dang
Dr Dien Dang undertook his medical training at the University of Adelaide, then working in the United Kingdom NHS before returning to the Royal Adelaide Hospital to complete his specialist training. He has completed fellowships in Respiratory and Sleep medicine at the Western Hospital in Victoria, and the Melbourne Sleep Disorders Centre.
He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), is accredited in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, and is a member of both the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and Australasian Sleep Association (ASA). Dr Dang currently holds staff specialist positions at Modbury Public Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide.
His Respiratory interests include lung cancer, COPD and interstitial lung disease. His clinical practice in sleep medicine encompasses all aspects of sleep including snoring and sleep apnoea, REM behaviour disorder, the Restless Legs Syndrome, Circadian Disorders, Narcolepsy and Parasomnias.

Dr Michael Chia
Dr Michael Chia undertook his medical degree at the University of Adelaide and completed his internship and post-graduate studies at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he is a Visiting Medical Specialist in the Department of General and Thoracic Medicine. He has over 15 years experience in Sleep Medicine and commenced at the Burnside Sleep Centre in 1996.
