Burnside's Maternity Unit has been designed and decorated to ensure that the special occasion of your baby's birth is spent in pleasant and modern surroundings. Our four delivery suites feature restful decor, while being discretely equipped with the latest medical technology. All open onto a leafy courtyard and have an ensuite bathroom, CD player, television and telephone.

After the birth, you are guaranteed a beautifully appointed private room with ensuite. The configuration of the rooms varies and the allocation of patients to rooms is managed according to patients' clinical needs and the activity within the unit. Therefore, please note that there are only four family rooms and that patients are unable to request specific rooms. Your partner is welcome to stay and be actively involved in your baby's care.

Specialised care for your baby is always on hand in the centrally located, well equipped nursery. This is the ideal place for you to learn how to care for your baby so you will feel confident once at home. Our support and care begins well before the birth of your baby. A comprehensive and flexible antenatal education program offers the options of attending four evening sessions or one all-day Saturday session. An early pregnancy class is also available.

Our experienced midwives will give you and your family personalised attention during your delivery and have extensive experience in managing all aspects of breast feeding.

Our care for you continues throughout your stay and beyond with regular post-natal group discussions, in-house educational videos, ongoing breast feeding and 24-hour telephone support.
If you wish to tour our facilities and discuss your individual needs with a midwife, please telephone the Maternity Unit on (08) 8202 7219 to arrange a convenient time.

The Burnside Hospital has introduced a Maternity Outreach Program in conjunction with the InterContinental Adelaide.  This voluntary program which offers the same level of care as you would receive in the Burnside Hospital  in a non clinical, more relaxed environment, may be available to you and your baby if you have had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery or elective caesarean section. Ante-natal Education

Ante-natal education is provided free of charge for women delivering at Burnside by the Unit's midwives.

The Early Pregnancy Class conducted by a Physiotherapist is held at 7pm on the first Wednesday of each month. You should attend one of these sessions as early as possible in your pregnancy (from 12 weeks). Topics covered are physical changes of pregnancy, pelvic floor and general pregnancy exercises and back care.

Ante-natal education is offered in two formats:

  1. A one-day comprehensive seminar held between 9am – 4pm on Saturday. Tea and coffee is provided.  Lunch can be purchased from the Café Otto, located adjacent to the Hospital’s front reception.  To gain most benefit from this format, you should attend between 32-34 weeks of pregnancy.
  2. Three weekly sessions held between 7-9pm on Tuesday evenings. If you choose this option, you need to begin at 28-30 weeks of your pregnancy.

Topics covered are :

Preparation for labour and delivery;
Pain relief options;
Immediate care of the newborn;
Induction of labour;
Forceps and caesarean deliveries;
Tour of the unit;
Massage, relaxation and positioning for delivery;
Your post-natal stay; and
Breastfeeding

In addition to our ante-natal classes, a variety of resource information is provided together with access to an extensive library of books and videotapes. Due to the popularity of our ante-natal classes, and in order to limit numbers to ten couples per session, you are encouraged to consider carefully your choice and timing of attendance.
