NEW WEAPON IN THE BATTLE AGAINST SKIN
CANCER AVAILABLE AT BURNSIDE HOSPITAL
Author : Manager - Marketing & Communication
Date : Thu 24th Jul 2003
A
non-invasive machine enabling faster, safer and more accurate diagnosis
of early stage melanoma is helping to put South Australians on
the front foot in the fight against skin cancer.
The SIAscope - available at Burnside Hospital - is the first
scanning device of its type to be introduced into the State
thanks to Melanoma
Screen SA, which is owned and operated by General Practitioners
for Quality.
The SIAscope will benefit thousands of South Australians each
year by providing them with access to the best technology available
in the early detection of melanomas giving them the best chance
of a full recovery if cancer is discovered. In some cases it
will
enable patients to avoid surgery.
The main benefits of the machine are its speed and accuracy.
And the procedure is painless.
It just involves placing the imaging handset on each pigmented
mole or freckle for about 10 seconds. The information is
then processed by the SIAscope to enable diagnosis. The
images are
then stored
for future review or comparison.
Patients requiring SIAscope scanning of lesions can be
GP, Specialist or self-referred.

SA on (08) 8364 5800.
