progress so far

Work on the multi-million
dollar redevelopment of the hospital’s facilities is progressing
well.
In May 2002, the hospital commissioned its new entrance and reception
foyer, on-site visitor car-parking and 21 new private rooms each
with en-suite, on the first floor of its new North Wing.
The first stage of the project comprising 17 new private rooms
- eight for maternity patients and nine in the general ward - was
completed in December 2001.
Burnside is now amongst the few private hospitals in Adelaide offering
all single room accommodation. Patients will only share rooms by
request or if they require high dependency care.
The emphasis of this landmark project has been to create a comfortable,
home-like atmosphere that combines modern finishes and furniture,
adequate space for patients’ visitors and best use of natural
light. Two rooms have been designed to meet the specific needs
of palliative care patients.
Throughout the remainder of 2002, work will continue on a number
of smaller projects including a cafe, expected to open by October,
additional medical consulting suites, and new administration offices.
The hospital’s South Wing is also being remodelled to accommodate
a state-of-the-art, six-bed Sleep Disorders Unit, the service having
been relocated to Abergeldie Hospital due to space constraints
during the building project.
Plans are also being finalised for a major re-fit of the hospital’s
Short Stay Procedure Unit to manage continued growth, with work expected
to begin midway through 2003.
The project has been funded from the hospital’s accumulated
reserves, borrowings and through the support of the Burnside Hospital
Development Appeal.
