The Burnside Hospital (BH) Transition to Professional Practice Program is a seven month program for newly Enrolled Nurses commencing in July.  The program is designed to facilitate the smooth and successful transition from student nurse to the role of professional Enrolled Nurse.

The Program

The Enrolled Nurse Transition to Professional Practice Program at Burnside Hospital consists of supported clinical practice, using a preceptor-ship model and non-clinical study days coordinated and provided by the Repatriation General Hospital (RGH) under the auspices of their Transition to Professional Practice Program for newly Enrolled Nurses.   Professional support will be available to the Enrolled Nurse from people occupying the following positions:

  • The Clinical Manager of the ward / unit to which the Enrolled Nurse is allocated.
  • The ward / unit Preceptor(s) allocated to the respective Enrolled Nurse.
  • Part-time Clinical  Nurse Educators
  • The RGH Nurse Consultants for the Transition to Professional Practice Program for Newly Enrolled Nurse

The broad aims of the RGH Transition to Professional Practice Program for Newly Enrolled Nurses are to provide a structured opportunity and supportive environment that will enable the Enrolled Nurse to:

  • Confidently and successfully make the transition from the role of student to the role of a competent Enrolled Nurse.
  • Further develop their nursing knowledge and build confidence in a range of acute care situations.

Program Structure

The Program is seven months in duration and will commence with an initial two day orientation to Burnside Hospital and up to five of supernumery time.  Enrolled Nurses will be employed at a minimum of 0.6 FTE over a 7 day roster (including early, afternoon, and night shifts) and are entitled to 6 weeks annual leave (pro-rata), which will be allocated in consultation with the relevant Clinical Manager. 

Non-Clinical Study Days

The Enrolled Nurse will be provided with five paid non-clinical study days at the RGH over the duration of the Program. 

Criteria for Successful Completion  

  • Achievement of the Transition to Professional Practice Program (RGH) aims and learning outcomes
  • Satisfactory completion of ward / unit based and clinical / evaluation requirements
  • Attendance at all non-clinical study days

Newly Enrolled Nurses interested in applying for the Transition to Professional Practice Program are required to forward the following:

  • Completed Application Form (PDF Format) 

  • Covering Letter

  • Resume

  • Copy of current criminal history checks (National Police Clearance)

  • Copies of Academic Transcripts

  • Copies of signed Clinical Placement Evaluations

  • Copy of BloodSafe E-Learning Tool Certificate of Acheivement (www.BloodSafelearning.org.au)

What is the selection process?
The selection of Enrolled Nurses will be based upon the standard recruitment and selection processes of BH.   This will involve an application, interview, reference check(s), professional declaration and pre-employment work capacity assessment.  Employment by the Hospital is a pre-requisite for entry into the BH Enrolled Nurse Transition to Professional Practice Program.  Successful applicants must be registered with the NBSA as an Enrolled Nurse before the start of the program.

Employment
Enrolled Nurses who are successful in being offered a placement in the BH Enrolled Nurse Transition to Professional Practice Program 2009 will be offered an employment contract as an Enrolled  Nurse (Diploma) 1st year.  
In accordance with Hospital policy regarding the employment of all new staff, Enrolled Nurses will have a probationary period of six months commencing from the date of their employment.   Regular feedback will be provided through the course of the program.
