Short Stay Procedure Unit
An overnight stay, before or after surgery, is now unnecessary for
many procedures due to advanced medical technology, improved anaesthetic
drugs and pain management techniques.
Staff in our Short Stay
Procedure Unit provide expert care for adults and children having
procedures in a number of specialty areas including :
• Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery
• Eye Surgery (eg. removal of cataracts)
• General Surgery (eg. carpal tunnel)
• Gynaecology
• Orthopaedics
• Plastic Surgery
• Oral Surgery (Wisdom Teeth)
• Respiratory
Endoscopic examinations including bronchoscopy, gastroscopy
and colonoscopy are also performed in the Unit's procedure room.
(Endoscopy is the viewing of the inside of the body using a rigid
or flexible telescope without the need to make an incision).
Burnside's Short Stay
Procedure Unit has been specifically designed to provide
a comfortable environment for those undergoing minor surgical
procedures or investigations.
On average, patients spend around four hours in the Unit, and staff
make every effort to make this short stay as pleasant and comfortable
as possible.
It is vital that you
arrange, in advance, for a responsible adult to accompany you
home and to stay with you for 24 hours following
your discharge from the Short Stay
Procedure Unit.
Day surgery provides flexible and affordable access to health care,
and allows patients to recuperate in the comfort of their own home.
If you have any questions or would like to visit the Unit before
your surgery, please contact staff by telephoning (08) 8202 7246
